Sustainability

We ♥ ocean. Together we help create healthy oceans with highly sustainable swimwear. We have a long-term commitment to the Healthy Seas and are proud members of 1% For The Planet. Protect what you love!

The Philosophy

Woodlike Ocean philosophy is to create feminine eco-friendly swimwear with a perfect fit and a sporty twist. Crafted in the highest quality for a long love affair with the ocean.

Our lines are inspired by a woman that embraces a healthy lifestyle, that is conscious and respectful towards the environment, confident and comfortable in all aspects of her being. A modern woman who loves the water, fashion and mother nature.

The result; ocean-friendly swimwear made out of 100% sustainable luxury Italian fabric in excellent and long-lasting quality. Last but not least it looks absolutely beautiful!

Sustainability

We believe that quality is the first step towards sustainability, and we are continuously working on improving our processes from design to manufacturing, sales, and distribution. We are committed to protecting our oceans with love by producing responsibly and ethically.

About 640,000 tons of fishing gear end up in our oceans every year. Fishing lines are one of the most deadly contributors to marine life damage. Every year they are responsible for trapping and killing millions of marine animals. Causing further damage by entangling live coral, smothering reefs, and introducing parasites and other invasive species into reef environments. It takes centuries for fishing lines to become fully biodegradable. The microplastics released in the process will be perceived as food by fish and eventually end up in the human food chain.

We are 1% For The Planet members and donate at least 1% of our net sales to the Healthy Seas organization. They are responsible for collecting the ghost fishing nets used in the ECONYL® regenerated nylon.

Our Italian fabric is made with 78% ECONYL® regenerated nylon composed of ghost fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring, and industrial plastic waste.

Each Woodlike bikini disposes of approximately 180-200 g of plastic waste from the sea.

*The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and The Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) Estimation: “Abandoned, Lost Or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear Report”.

Fabric

We only use premium Italian fabric from 78% ECONYL® regenerative nylon yarn and 22% Xtra Life Lycra®.

The ECONYL® regeneration system rescues waste like reclaimed fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring, and industrial plastic. Waste is sorted and cleaned to recover all the possible nylon to create premium-grade ECONYL® regenerative nylon fabric.

Our innovative and very durable fabric has UPF 50+ UV protection, is ultra-resistant to chlorine, and has higher shape retention than any mainstream swimwear fabric.

Donation

Our commitment goes beyond the usage of the regenerated ECONYL® yarn; Woodlike Ocean is a partner member of the 1% For The Planet® organization.

For every purchased piece you donate 1% to the Healthy Seas initiative. One of their main activities is to organize voluntary divers who recover ghost fishing nets used together with other nylon waste to make the ECONYL® yarn.

Packaging

We consider every single action we make as a label and are always looking for the best sustainable packaging solutions. Let us know if you have a better one, we are very much open for improvement!

We try to keep packaging as minimal as possible. In this same manner, we developed a reusable and 100% recyclable packaging for our swimwear; a clutch made out of Tyvek® that can be used as a waterproof pouch for your bikini or simply as a fashion accessory and not just throw away article.

Another eco-friendly packaging we use for our online orders is a home compostable satchel, called the “Dirtbag” that will fully biodegrade in 3-6 months in your home compost. We simply fold and put our swimwear into the Dirtbag without any other individual plastics and wrapping. This way it works as a mailbag and protective sleeve for you swimwear during shipping.

All other packaging, printed forms, stickers, hang tags are made from recycled and eco-certified materials.

Production / Fair Trade

Not only how, but by whom our swimwear is made is just as important to us.

The production of our swimwear takes place in a small socially responsible family business in Turkey. For us, responsible production conditions and fair treatment of partners and employees are central. Personal contact with our producers is very important to us, which is why we visit them for every single collection to see for ourselves on site.

We work to minimize the negative impacts associated with manufacturing and ensure that everyone involved is treated fairly and with respect. We are even happier to have found such a great team, where every single piece is handmade with love.

Why recycling?

For our swimwear line, we have consciously opted for recycled fabrics instead of using new materials. We believe that upcycling and recycling waste into new products would be a great option in the clean-up and overall reduction of waste pollution.

Recycling may not save the planet but it helps to reduce consumption of new raw materials and conserves natural resources. In fact, it takes two-thirds less energy to make products from recycled plastic than it does by using virgin materials. It also keeps plastic away from landfills and the ocean. Ocean waste also releases pollutants into the soil and water.

In this manner, we turn waste into something wonderful!
